Okay, so I'm not exactly sure how many of you have recently seen, but having watched the film again recently, it made me think for a little bit. Tl;dr version down at the bottom of this post.Dr. Christopher Nelsen is seen in his earthly life as a pediatrician, and there is not a single scene where he is seen with an adult person alone, apart from his wife, and there is but a single scene where he talks to a child's parent.
It is implied in his dialogue that he is not overly fond of the parent, either. Why is this important?
Well, point one - Dr. Nelsen is a mysanthrope. He refuses to divorce at a certain point in the story. It may show that he is deep down afraid of being left alone, and that Annie, his wife, is in fact the only adult person he can relate to (and it is not even explicitly shown just how much he relates to children either). This is further shown in his transcendence into afterlife, the supposed 'Heaven', where he is alone, apart from a man whom he recognises as Albert, his former mentor. Later on, the man turns out to be Ian, his son, who had deliberately taken the shape of his former mentor, in a desperate try to reach his father and get him to finally listen.Let me get back a bit, to his transcendence again. As Chris reaches the supposed 'Heaven', he is presented with a world composed of Annie's paintings, again not just showing how much he is emotionally dependent on her, but revealing a deeper, darker twist - he only thinks of Annie, and of Annie alone. He does not even think of his children, let alone anyone else.
He is shown to reluctantly 'let her go' and 'stop haunting her', but this only ends up depriving her off her will to live, eventually leading to her suicide. More about that in a moment.Chris meets with his Marie, his daughter, whom he does not recognise either at first.
It takes him a little bit to do so, but only when she taps into his memories, reminding him that there were other people present in his life - namely, his children. Moreover, Marie lives in Heaven with other people. There are two main, subtle differences between her and him here. First, she lives here with other people, sharing the everyday and caring for each other.
He is alone (apart from Albert/Ian, who is not really there to keep him company). Second, she is happy. Even without her parents, she is happy. He is not happy - regardless of how much he tries to enjoy the supposed 'Heaven', he still misses his wife. Point two - Chris, in a bizarre way, actually wants Annie to die ASAP, so that they 'could be together again'. However, he will not admit that to himself. He wants them to be together, without admitting to himself that he desires for Annie's death.Albert (Ian) tells Chris (his oblivious fater) something along the lines of 'you enter Hell by choice', and that 'there are no rules to it'.
When asked about Annie (who had recently commited suicide), he informs Chris that 'Annie is in Hell, because she killed herself', followed by a clumsy explanation of the obvious contradiction. 'It doesn't work that way'. Let's remember that Ian (Albert) has not yet revealed himself as Chris' son, and he does not do so for a long time after.
What Dreams May Come Free
Point three Ian is lying to Chris, most likely deliberately lying, in order to achieve something. But what?Chris descends into the supposed 'Hell', with a tracker found by Ian (still seen as Albert). Ian again deliberately finds the tracker whom he knows Chris will trust, manipulating him further into something. The tracker is also revealed to be one of the few people whom Chris had deep trust in during his earthly life. Point four - it is now clear that Ian (Albert) is manipulating Chris.
Only after doing all this, Ian is finally revealed as who he really is, now that Chris has already done everything Ian wanted him to.After walking through the Faces of the Damned, hearing people talk, all in denial of their views and actions, Chris finally finds Annie in what looks like a dark, desolate version of their house. Annie is also alone. And Annie does not recognise Chris. Point five - Annie does not recognise Chris, much like Chris did not recognise his children. This is an important fact in the plot. Everyone else seems to know Chris pretty well.
And every other peson, for all we know. Can we go as shallow as to assume everyone recognised Chris because he did not change his appearance? I think that would be a very weak point, seeing how deep into mental and emotional analysis this film goes.I think this is one of the major revelations that happens here. It is revealed by Albert/Ian that people in Hell are in denial.
Think of it as a transcedental version of a Dunning-Kruger effect - nobody in Hell would be completely aware of it, regardless of how much persuasion be cast upon them. This was made clear in the film, more than once. Second, people in Hell do not seem to recognise anyone from their earthly life, at least not at first. This is something both Annie and Chris have in common. So, after a struggle where Chris ends up drawn into the supposed 'Hell', Annie seems to 'wake up' and take them back into their supposed 'Heaven', which is now all shiny and full of colour. All seems to be well, and Annie recognises her children without any introduction.
Visually, they are now shown as what they look like in real life, but does it matter? Annie recognises them, despite earlier not recognising Chris, who had also not changed his appearance. I think this part is very neatly put, sending a subtle message. We have seen people recognise others regardless of their appearance, when in Heaven (such as Marie and Ian). We have seen people unable to recognise others, when in Hell (such as Annie and Chris).

In addition to the illicit download of confidential data from network endpoints USB devices also bring in the risk from Viruses and other malicious software, posing.
This goes further to confirm the point five made above. And it can only conclude to one thing - people in Hell are unable to recognise anyone, not even their most loved ones. Finally, Chris suggests to Annie how they shold 'try it all again', reincarnate and live through it all once more. After remarkably little persuasion, Annie agrees (and adds 'to make different choices'). What happens? They recognise each other as soon as they first meet, even as little children.
They are finally happy. They are now in Heaven, despite returning to their earthly life. So, what can we conclude from this? Based on the given facts, it follows like this. Christopher Nelsen is a dark, mysanthropic person who ends up in Hell after death. He is in denial, unable to grasp this fact, still only caring about his wife - and not even his children. His son Ian appears in front of him in order to get him out, just like Chris later on descends into Hell to get Annie out.
Chris wants Annie to join him, unable to let her go, and eventually causing her suicide. Ian reluctantly agrees to help him out as much as he can, fully aware that he has still not managed to pull his father out of Hell, either. Ian is the real hero here, regardless of how much he may lie or manipulate his father, he only does it for the greater good. There are far too many similarities in Annie's and Chris' afterlife to be ignored, and they all indicate that they are both in the dark side of the afterlife, regardless of how much Chris manages to convince himself otherwise. This is also why Annie eventually, when finally in Heaven, pleads to 'make different choices', in order to prevent them from going down again. And, on the bright side, once they both learn their lesson, they are in Heaven right from the start.EDIT: After reading some of the comments, here is my view on him being in the Purgatory, rather than Hell.
Dreams May Come Script Pdf Online
First of all, the Purgatory is not mentioned anywhere in the film (unless I have completely missed it). Regardless of that, his moods and actions clearly depict those of the people in Hell. Nowhere in the film is it mentioned how people in the Purgatory would feel and what would their distinctive characteristics be.
I admit he was most likely a good man, but there are still a few facts to counter this. First, he was clearly a misanthrope. That is a rather weak reason to be in Hell, I admit. Second, he almost ruined his marriage, making lives of his most loved ones miserable. That's a much bigger reason, although he did save it in the end (not for long, though).
Third, he was not really shown as very much moved by his children's deaths. Any other parent - such as Annie in the same scenes - would be an emotional wreck. He was not shown as such, almost at all.
Which doesn't make him a very good man anymore (IMHO). Third, once he reaches the afterlife, one of the first things he thinks of is his wife, and his desire to be there with him. This is what makes him a bad man, at that point. He literally wants his wife to die, regardless of whether he accepts it or not. Then comes the denial, where he cannot accept that they are separated, not even at the price of having to wait for her for a few years/decades, compared to the eternity together.
He is not willing to make that temporary sacrifice. It is he, and he alone, who refuses to let go off his wife (denial again), eventually causing her suicide.
I believe this is a major plot point. Figuring out that he killed herself because he made her kill herself is the fact that does make him a 'bad man', a man who is in Hell, because he deserves to be there.
Which all makes Ian even more of a hero.Thank you everyone for reading my short little review.I will convert it into a portable document soon, and post the link here, as some of my clients have expressed interest in reading it.tl;dr - Chris dies, goes down to Hell. He denies it, despite all the evidence showing so.
He causes his own wife's suicide, pulling her down into hell as well. His son Ian descends into Hell in order to save his father, just like Chris appears to do so in order to save his wife. Chris barely succeeds, which makes Ian's effort a success. All is well after Annie and Chris learn their lessons in the big picture.
